SUARAM UPDATE: 23 November 1998

1. ISA Arrest

  • Abdul Malik Hussein, who was detained under the ISA, was released during the weekend.
  • However there is one possible new arrest which is Mr. Zulkefli Othman. We have yet to confirm whether he has been detained under the ISA, although his wife was informed by the police on the 20th that he is. We will post more details in the next few days.

2. Remand of those arrested in KLCC 15th Nov.

The remand of those arrested in KLCC on the 15th, has been extended to 3 more days.

3. Remand of Tian Chua and two others.

Tian Chua and two others have been remanded for 8 days for further investigation. They will appear before a magistrate on the 30th.

However, SUARAM and his lawyers view his detention along with 2 other men, as illegal. This is because they should have been presented in front of the magistrate within 24 hours. The three were only brought to a magistrate at least 36 hours since they were arrested. Thus their detention is not only unlawful but unconstitutional.

His lawyers, M. Puravalen, will be putting in a revision in the High Court. We will update you later tomorrow, once the revision has been submitted.

4. Tian Chua as "master-mind"

Tian Chua along with SUARAM coordinator, Elizabeth Wong, was accused of being "master-minds" among other things such as inciting "riots", "paying" demonstrators, etc., in Utusan Malaysian editorial today. (Utusan is said to be the most influential Malay language paper in the country; we will email you a translation of that tomorrow).

SUARAM is concerned because this can escalate to a possible crackdown on pro-democracy activists in Malaysia. Please look at our next email for an urgent alert on the immediate release of Tian Chua and the others.
