SUARAM UPDATE: 23 November 1998 1. ISA Arrest
2. Remand of those arrested in KLCC 15th Nov. The remand of those arrested in KLCC on the 15th, has been extended to 3 more days. 3. Remand of Tian Chua and two others. Tian Chua and two others have been remanded for 8 days for further investigation. They will appear before a magistrate on the 30th. However, SUARAM and his lawyers view his detention along with 2 other men, as illegal. This is because they should have been presented in front of the magistrate within 24 hours. The three were only brought to a magistrate at least 36 hours since they were arrested. Thus their detention is not only unlawful but unconstitutional. His lawyers, M. Puravalen, will be putting in a revision in the High Court. We will update you later tomorrow, once the revision has been submitted. 4. Tian Chua as "master-mind" Tian Chua along with SUARAM coordinator, Elizabeth Wong, was accused of being "master-minds" among other things such as inciting "riots", "paying" demonstrators, etc., in Utusan Malaysian editorial today. (Utusan is said to be the most influential Malay language paper in the country; we will email you a translation of that tomorrow). SUARAM is concerned because this can escalate to a possible crackdown on pro-democracy activists in Malaysia. Please look at our next email for an urgent alert on the immediate release of Tian Chua and the others. |
