MEDIA STATEMENT ISSUED BY SOCIETY FOR CHRISTIAN REFLECTION (SCR) ON 29 SEPTEMBER 1998

The Society for Christian Reflection(SCR) is greatly concerned over the detention of 3 more persons under the Internal Security Act (ISA). This brings the total number of persons arrested under the ISA supposedly in connection with Anwar Ibrahim's Reformation Movement to 17.

SCR states categorically that any law allowing for indefinite detention without trial is morally indefensible.

We are disturbed by what Anwar Ibrahim said in connection with his treatment under the ISA that he was severely beaten, kept in a dark room and moved to and from secret hideouts. We assume that this is the manner in which all ISA detainees are treated during the first 60 days of detention. We also assume that the other 16 persons detained under the ISA in connection with the Reformation Movement are at present at the mercy of the police.

This kind of torture, which encompasses both the physical and the mental spheres, is something that we abhor. The fact that the ISA allows such abuses to take place is sufficient to call for its total abolition.

Under given circumstances, we urge the police to permit the detainees frequent visits by family members and lawyers.

We thus call for the repeal of the ISA and the immediate and unconditional release of all those presently detained under the ISA.
