| Commentary – 4 October 98 IT IS SAD THAT THE PUBLIC CRY FOR CHANGE (and/or reformation) SEEM TO HAVE FIZZLED OUT BECAUSE ANWAR HAS NOW BEEN CHARGED. BUT IT HAS NOT - FOR THE CRY IS FOR JUSTICE, AN END TO CORRUPTION AND CRONYISM, A MORE INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY & AG'S CHAMBERS... So, why the "calm" we are experiencing? 1) The Anwar Black Eye, which also send a clear message that the state is taking a no holds barred approach. If they can do it to Anwar, we will surely be able to do it to you. 2) There is confusions and questions about the following:- a) Why was anwar's black eye given so much prominence. His allegation of physical abuse was given good coverage. The best picture of the eye was a Bernamapic. Are the papers not controlled and owned by the people in power - so why so much coverage? b) The police was /most concerned about problems in court when Anwar was to be brought to court. That is why, on one day with no prior notice...Anwar was brought to court. But why the AG in his statement tell people that Anwar was going to be charged the following day? Was it a fumble? If not, why disclose? - people were worried that this might be a trap or something... c) With the release of some of the ISA detainees, including members of the EXCO of ABIM, - the present leaders seem to have opted to wait to clarify with their seniors who are now out? Should the present leaders hand back the reign to their seniors? d) I have been informed that some companies have placed certain restrictions on their employees. They are not to ask each other "Who do you support? Anwar or mahathir?", not to discuss the issue, not to distribute documents related to the issue, and lastly not to get involved in any activities connected with this issue. If they contravene this "directive" they could lose their jobs. e) Similarly University students have been threatened with disciplinary actions if they get involved. f) One staff in a company here reveled that they have been told that MIMOS is monitoring the net...Any e-mail will be intercepted...and therefore people/friends can get into trouble. g) The formation of GERAK resulted in the end of independent actions initiated by smaller groups. These persons/groups are now waiting for GERAK to initiate...but the very structure of GERAK, which comprises of PAS,DAP<PRM and other NGOs, is crippling. GERAK will most probably NOT call for 'illegal' mass gatherings to protest. Actions proposed by GERAK this far is that "cars should on their headlights during the day" and people shopuld off their home lights between 8.00 and 8.10pm this coming Tuesday". h) The excessive force used by the police in dispersing the "illegal" gatherings at Dataran Merdeka, etc.. has served its objective of being a detterent to further actions. i) The plan of action has changed...from holding mass gathering to information dissemination and awareness building at the grassroots. BUT NOTE THAT THE ISSUE IS NOT ANWAR --- BUT THE STRUGGLE FOR THE REESTABLISHMENT OF THE RULE OF LAW AND A MORE INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY, AG'S OFFICE AND POLICE-- FOR THE PROTEST OF "TRIAL BY MEDIA", CORRUPTIOM IN GOVENMENT, THE REPEAL OF LAWS THAT PROVIDE FOR DETENTION WITHOUT TRIAL, ETC... HAVE THE PEOPLE GIVEN UP OR IS THE BERITA HARIAN EDITORIAL the correct analysis. |
