Tian Chua: Letter from Lockup

30 more days, 1998 will vanish. Last nite there was heavy downpour and thunder, but I was like in another world. I can only hear the sound of rainfll hitting the roof and imagining the scene of lightning striking in the horizon.

For the time being I am locked up alone in the cell at the end corner. No complaints, this gives a 6 x 6 feet area to myself for some moment of peace. It is a very strange feeling - like I am completely disconnected from the world. Everything surrounding me is external to me - the rain outside, songs and conversations from other cells; police shouting even the PJ air which I am familiar with, ....

I am glad to be greeted by so many friends outside. Thank you very much for all your efforts and support. What I am going thru is just minor inconveniences - still can't be considered suffering at all.

The dictatorial regim just want to make life difficult for ys activists. But these tricks could not stop people from rising up! Although I am isolated from all of you, I can feel your spirit. I and other firends head your chanting last Thursday, we too chanted inside. A Lance-corporal Zulkifli came to warn us after the chanting; it showed that the police were frightened by the presence of people's power.

He threatened to strip our citizenship. This showed the mentality of the oppressors. They see criticism against those in power as a betrayal of the country. Not only they want to throw me outof the country, they even employed massive police force and helicopters to intimidate peaceful protestors.

On Saturday nite, I was surprised that police helicopter kept flying over the lock-up. From the distance, I guessed there must be a gathering in front of the police station. But I tell you, all the police inside the station were more nervous than you outside. With all the repressive laws on their side, as well as powerful weapons and equipment in their hands, they were unable to intimidate us - for the truth is with us! Subconsciously, people who abuse power know that history has been proven repeatedly, the unjust and corrupted regime with eventually collapse!

I will wait patiently for that moment. Please don't worry for my conditions, I will take care of myself. Please also continue to open up more fronts of the struggle, we need to bring in more people and more issues into the struggle. There are more injustices needed to be exposed and I hope the preparation for the Human Rights Day is going well - It has to be a success!

My best regards to all members of Gagasan and GERAK. Hopefully I will join up with you soon.

Selamat Berjuang,
Tian
